Bravo's Work of Art

There is a new show on Bravo called "Work of Art" that is a reality show about artists competing in the same fashion as Project Runway. It reminds me a bit of being in art school: the interaction, the critique, the deadlines, and the pressure. I miss that. So I've decided to challenge myself along with the show. This is a catch up post because they are 4 episodes into the show so I am using some older pieces that fit the theme but I plan on creating new works each week.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><strong>Episode 1: Self Reflexive</strong><br /><br /><br />To get on the show each artist had to submit a self portrait and in the first episode they were partnered up and tasked with doing a portrait of the other artist.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Here is my self portrait:<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493118298127384242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZBZ45_sBNwRF7G-fGF2zLvysyLyCCjfu7iIyi3ErSiyHLXEFLjp7B-XkNALjGb02r1v9_eF_l9_9em0TF2PKjHqwlgediFZOViuSWTZSxPJF1WNJtw_8BHxdt5kGS8HlZLUl_w0OAEl5-/s400/Black+and+Blue.jpg" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 286px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" /><br /><br /><br />Here is my portrait:<br /><br /><br /><br /><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493137340739420482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsUfs6WRqNBrxp2gB_8w2SEVmKy1KYjuqdqKV7WLBhYB5k4ouAAVOSORMu4cyYzWfQ9adZ-tLRq3yo4rf5ISqFw_zQ-Zd5_ZxjFP6M-sCGaF7tkh-X1El8aQoIjfL34U_Zc06ku2zdYtiO/s400/big+hair+charcoal.jpg" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 276px; CURSOR: hand" /><br /><br /><strong>Episode 2: The Shape of Things To Come</strong><br /><br />In this episode they were taken to a junk yard of sorts and have to use discarded things in their work. I do this a lot anyway! I made this necklace using a piece I took out of an antique cash register. I used different abrasive techniques to give it this finish.<br /><br /><br /><p><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493598043941267970" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_o-MzAvKJQYk9JToNd-LEGhvuAR_lM8owFyTWEWSTO-IEWgi3uek4PITBK0gA4rTqAns6XXkktgDMhEAtZD_cNCriJzSo0rxvB8cgd0vs4uKqu6oNLXeJ02xWM_ygUJqcEQPpTAyLr1Oa/s400/cash+register+textured+necklace+2.jpg" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 268px; CURSOR: hand" /><strong></strong></p><p><strong>Episode 3: Judging a Book by it's Cover</strong></p><p>They had to create a book cover and the winner will have his actually printed. It actually was quite beautiful if you didn't know what it was! I totally got inspired and started playing around with some things in my closet and came up with a cute outfit I want to wear to the next art opening. The tights are brown but almost purple and I have mary jane shoes that match. I really wanted to wear leg warmers with them but all I had that would work are blue ones, however I really love them with that odd shade of brown after all. I tried on a short skirt that I was going to take to a resale shop thinking it would never fit me but it does! It's really short so I'll have to get my brave on to wear it but why not right? I also pulled out a sleeveless turtleneck sweater that looks great with it. I put a thick gray belt over the sweater and I really like the outfit.</div><br /><div align="center"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439283747852106274" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3M9-CC05L21SK8SGUX_CPNA87CaAEzOi7uIXW71-bOTiKB6tPNcVAEE5J0VO19hNdRuWKIzfFdadz0LYxsc4BLe7Vr10yGY_WAgigm4-YjHIjPLy0ca92wXyWxY0wvVaxgreoruf1iYU/s400/DSC_2568.jpg" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 196px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" />What do you think? Older Self Portraits and Fashion Shoots

Dug up some old 8x10's and decided to post some. Most of these are over 10 years old and taken when I was in college.<br /><p align="center"><a href="http://lilacpopphotography.etsy.com/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436294710214125154" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguZVRXTrxD89GzrckMV4n7CVDAzGs9AJ7mkSaSlWfdswUeGXnzNRdnKcEsTQCizUIlK8QJJN9MijkDmvxDbQ2LVUiXuk87Cx3V8CiC0GSnOz6NroQ297A5rdKCnH0_0p3BFu3yspaqmPo/s400/DSC_1905.jpg" style="WIDTH: 268px; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a href="http://lilacpopphotography.etsy.com/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436291730589172466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlYgI0m7JW8MMmNlJgH-JjqleFudIpxye3Rqug3cR63si7jNQIsQsNvr5iBDqKVF6FR0KmY1mcH3lPY79vkoNJldKA3DP0_9Q_GEJ4amIiCSRyxlmEtGLn7G89IeOIFfaeracuRkQtRcA/s400/DSC_1896.jpg" style="WIDTH: 285px; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p><br /><br /><p align="center"><a href="http://lilacpopphotography.etsy.com/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436287186471667538" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd2zV4y_sBiu-KbL-oByyWjK-DdmC78wQwTGhjfJVbTKo_kx9uYjuoQKACA9H7TLs6IXjNFaCMRrkgqXFcSCFuV7kn56yAt3NHwt0XgsDCyPeuyF7-rpeMLDgnKAdz3O0PBwSx2N_775c/s400/DSC_1836.jpg" style="WIDTH: 268px; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p><div align="center">Oh to be young and in college and so deep...ha.<br /></div><br /><br /><p align="center"><a href="http://lilacpopphotography.etsy.com/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436287175020387106" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI_ehgfsUv4GFrx7AN8QXfMNSzEiRKs_14SRvg2fCgMEpCjXfkGX4u4ob2gR6DGeQFlXKMpKEWCIu750K3r7MhelQc-6frDSKfQNAAHh0LVzV0neuLzlDt0WKE8A7Y_DxnzSZ_OauV7RY/s400/DSC_1848.jpg" style="WIDTH: 400px; HEIGHT: 260px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a href="http://lilacpopphotography.etsy.com/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436291721437561122" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl6ZQe4dlM2_3vwWO6F2rbGilS7FAD8w52t2kmDxdK2C98RDo-noD3BrndvNqCYNq4JAOPIDoowPk0ykPi-Vcq7e1waJYrmlTHf-YsfUG96hmoMyZff1ce3-jLIjcV0VGJ0enlDvnWurU/s400/DSC_1864.jpg" style="WIDTH: 400px; HEIGHT: 259px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a href="http://lilacpopphotography.etsy.com/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436291717242598946" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiferCH1gkLP5Pch-ST0vM9TjNabphUkArgYdpmP9KjtP30RLiI5rg-aKZyyHBp8Idw0-SkCcobcCYu62JJHziQltndql7WpciUKCd8vfHjBn_-9nPLea9bJyIXsLFEEd0HNACJuk6SXtU/s400/DSC_1850.jpg" style="WIDTH: 265px; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p><div align="center">I didn't alter this photo at all-those adorable blue eyes are natural.<br /></div><p align="center"><a href="http://lilacpopphotography.etsy.com/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436283216016904578" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc-oUycdFVYPtGWwNBOqbQgrtCwc9Cswo7eiM-tlBN-YQU8WDvKbRt9XNlo87D-z8P54ndFGabXQwfCNoLB5Yqsg4Kbiqx3ltlQmcfE6B5w1T1CmzenoGH45az_EuvP2iGvXKDgXUhNOo/s400/DSC_1833.jpg" style="WIDTH: 283px; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" /></a> </p><p align="center"><a href="http://lilacpopphotography.etsy.com/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436287173112587698" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmZsk0JSEMTSHTMqunsZM658xKT5LMyVJGQj4-kCAsIox5WOXDeu0ETDLNLfyK9LbtW0MU_87d9lVGgcHhiWDaN77ZzqK_fMhGZhjxo3_pyjSkZWtfDiS8ev9mmDzsT6eop81YxT3ni6w/s400/Justy+shiny.jpg" style="WIDTH: 274px; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p><br /><p align="center"><a href="http://lilacpopphotography.etsy.com/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436283213108967266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB_LrbCH1F6QjiqTLv1f2GfCl0vn_EFLemCjgDwe1LZwKz1ckEHVmXTf_BFednR3Y_bMy9S1A_2kOTFha1Yci6ad9ANyaEZa0WsgOacOtXXrzHHX62IFrW6XWNbZ7Mk_uzKTCTqDXI0iU/s400/DSC_1834.jpg" style="WIDTH: 233px; HEIGHT: 331px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p><div align="center">This photo was published in a book. Older Self Portraits and Fashion Shoots

Self Portraits of a Redhead

Not only is she very brave to post them publicly but I like her observance of eye contact or hiding her face in most of her shots as a reflection of her shyness. I started to evaluate my own self portraits. I've always felt like if I showed them publicly I was being conceited or something. But now it's either my attitude of not caring so much what people think of me or it's a study in self reflection that has brought me to this post. I was also asked to dig out an old photo of an art piece I created in college that had me digging through old photographs this weekend and I came across quite a few self portraits. These are just the ones I have on my computer. There are quite a few more.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlYQrl-6Uz60Bo-4v224GvrCzWW5dTAvcAP5Cv0Yo-AcCJHT2QoHxjLn9-kEWIl_-QKz12tcj-Hzq_FSYWxjHAD-c-y5zH8y4YQDJlw5TSZnQn1AFgl8Yc4-fXyiOgOfvyqCcvebOuXFk/s1600-h/DSC_1099.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433273169475142050" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlYQrl-6Uz60Bo-4v224GvrCzWW5dTAvcAP5Cv0Yo-AcCJHT2QoHxjLn9-kEWIl_-QKz12tcj-Hzq_FSYWxjHAD-c-y5zH8y4YQDJlw5TSZnQn1AFgl8Yc4-fXyiOgOfvyqCcvebOuXFk/s400/DSC_1099.JPG" style="WIDTH: 208px; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p>The self portraits I used to take when I was a photography student in college were usually straight on--me looking directly at the camera. I had no fear of the camera and exposing myself. I think part of that was confidence and part of that was I was working in an art department where all the students did such things. It was considered normal to take all kinds of crazy photos of yourself. Then after graduation they start to change a bit. I don't really know if it was a lack of confidence or just me playing with different angles. Does it matter really? Anyway, I have been taking a lot of self portraits lately, mostly due to my etsy shop. I took these few yesterday while I was doing a massive shoot of clothes to sell on ebay. <br /><p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6oWtnzMgH5tTNCWUhHlBdy5jHqpvBVyJBvlifb_VS1dmCU7xdNMhaMljpBHNts_nwu_Yc67qvy2wJpz_urgQi7vpHEb58o21DhUDVmbMdIlMapN9_2X2Znma1RJG03T8a6GXLv9gBAfk/s1600-h/DSC_1103.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433273000902892466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6oWtnzMgH5tTNCWUhHlBdy5jHqpvBVyJBvlifb_VS1dmCU7xdNMhaMljpBHNts_nwu_Yc67qvy2wJpz_urgQi7vpHEb58o21DhUDVmbMdIlMapN9_2X2Znma1RJG03T8a6GXLv9gBAfk/s400/DSC_1103.JPG" style="WIDTH: 268px; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" /></a></p>One of the reasons I love self portraits is because of the sense of control you get as a photographer. Not only are you totally in charge of what's happening behind the camera but in front as well. It's exciting. <br /><br /><p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-iB2UQ1BoVLcfvlVknD0HjKZr7_SLcd-fmCu4IOkYwCpvpFuQEinNvTdnLVVpmROf9NXOcSFvCsKOImqzx7idBI_rSyPRpM6ngtX9b77z_zXM8K4hMyewHGXpauNfVLSYnO8V7UeDCqE/s1600-h/Janna+portrait+short+hair.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433273166712459986" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-iB2UQ1BoVLcfvlVknD0HjKZr7_SLcd-fmCu4IOkYwCpvpFuQEinNvTdnLVVpmROf9NXOcSFvCsKOImqzx7idBI_rSyPRpM6ngtX9b77z_zXM8K4hMyewHGXpauNfVLSYnO8V7UeDCqE/s400/Janna+portrait+short+hair.jpg" style="WIDTH: 278px;
